Faith Community Calls for a Just and Humane Immigration System

When President Biden ran for office, he promised to make the immigration system fair, orderly and humane. He said he wished to “undo the moral and national shame of the previous administration.” On his first day in office, he announced sweeping plans to reform decades-old U.S. immigration laws.

But two years later little has changed. Migrants still daily risk death from any number of dangers— lethal exposure to excessive heat or cold, drowning trying to cross rivers, suffocation in semi-trailers, falls from the border wall, outright homicide, and now detention center disasters. Of those who reach here, the vast majority face denial of entry—or even worse, family separation.

Largely because of a lack of good faith efforts on the part of the Republican Congress and a conservative Supreme Court, the President has only been able to deal with this issue via Executive Orders, but even those have disappointed immigrant advocates. He now has finally ended the oppressive Title 42 policy, but the situation at the border continues to be dangerous and untenable for the thousands of migrants trying to enter the US. The UN has criticized Biden’s replacement of Title 42 with Title 8 as a violation of international law:

“Barriers preventing people from exercising the fundamental human right to seek asylum are unacceptable and contrary to States’ international obligations. The new US Government Rule that restricts access for asylum-seekers who arrive irregularly after transiting through another country is incompatible with principles of international refugee law,” said the United Nation’s Refugee Agency and International Migration Organization in a joint statement.

In a very real sense, our immigration system is not “broken,” as we so often hear. It is doing the job our politicians want it to do quite well, namely, to discourage all but the most “desirable” immigrants from even trying to come to the U.S. This despite the fact that our economy runs on immigrant labor, including the undocumented, who lack “papers” but are willing to do the jobs U.S. citizens are not.

We could speak further of all the many contributions immigrants have always made to this nation and the fact that they pay taxes, replace our aging workforce, create small businesses, etc., but that is not our purpose in this letter. Rather it is simply to remind people of faith – all faiths – that all religions teach us that all people are siblings to us, no matter their race, nationality, or economic status. Clearly, this is not the way we should be treating other members of our human family.

We are not calling for “open borders” – no country is bound to accept all those who wish to resettle there to the point its social and economic life is jeopardized. But people also have a right to migrate, and all, migrants and natives, are equal in God’s eyes. We are calling for a system that is humane, and for the U.S. to live up to the international agreements it has been part of for decades,

We call upon our leaders to think about the common good, instead of viewing immigration as a useful “wedge” issue, and we call upon our citizens to reject the politics of fear and demonization and call upon our elected officials to do the same. Lastly, we call upon all faith communities to respond to this moral crisis and become even stronger advocates for our immigrant families.

DSC Releases Immigrant Justice Petitions

Dane Sanctuary Coalition urges elected officials to protect undocumented immigrants

“Our undocumented immigrant neighbors and friends, and the 4.4 million US citizen children living with them, deserve to live with dignity, free of fear, insecurity, and anguish. We must allow them to thrive. Otherwise, Americans will continue to live with generations of traumatized children, who become traumatized adults. The time for change is now.

As people of faith, we urgently ask you to advocate and work towards:

  • Paths to legalization: Presidential pardon; expansion of Temporary Protected Status.

  • Abolishing of 287g, a policy that creates constant fear and stress in immigrant families.

  • Ending for-profit detention centers – there is flagrant abuse and unaccountability, not to mention the immorality of profiting from people’s vulnerability.”

First Baptist & Bethany UMC Support Resettling Afghan Refugees

Congregations, resettlement agencies, among other organizations across Wisconsin, are actively doing the important work of helping hundreds of Afghan refugees establish new homes and establish supportive relationships with their communities. In Madison, Bethany United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church are partnering to help four households in an extended family of Afghan refugees. These households have eight adults and 15 children, including a newborn who is now their first US citizen! This ministry complements support provided by Jewish Social Services, the resettlement agency for the family, Open Doors for Refugees, among others.

In working with the Afghan families, we have seen how very difficult resettlement is for them. We have learned of other Afghan families that are isolated and that have needs that aren’t being met for various reasons, including language and cultural barriers. Helping them become self-sufficient is a multi-faceted effort requiring an on-going relationship that seeks to balance mentoring and support of their needs with letting them take responsibility for their own lives and the consequences of their actions. It has been a rewarding but challenging experience. We have learned much about their culture and have shared much about our culture. This friendship began with directly connecting with the Afghan families, something that is a real programmatic need for congregations also wanting to befriend Afghan families.

Thank you for your donations!

What started with a few friendly neighborhood emails exploded into enormous generosity…and by all accounts a project that created a warm welcome to the refugees at Fort McCoy. After two U Haul truckloads (thanks to Open Doors for Refugees for securing the trucks!) and at least 5 car loads…the porch and garage are finally empty and the last load has been delivered. We were able to briefly tour the sewing rooms which THANKS TO ALL OF YOU are filled with sewing machines, fabric, and lots of buttons, zippers, thread and scissors. The women we were able to speak with were excited to be able to create beautiful things for their families. The children…in that universal gesture of warmth….ran to hug us.

Some of you we know, and some of you just found your way to the porch. Some of you are from near Madison and some donations came from other parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota. And, there are some folks who left donations but not an email, so if you know of them, please forward this.

To ALL of you…THANK YOU for your thoughtful generosity. Every remnant, bolt, button and spool mattered. It really did take a village here…and we believe we helped, in a small but meaningful way, to lighten the burden of these new arrivals to Wisconsin that have journeyed so far.
