Said WFVJ Board President Reverend Larry Sexe, “We are excited to welcome Matt Kendziera as our new Executive Director. We were impressed by his passionate commitment to justice and to working across faiths. DSC Releases Immigrant Justice Petitions

Dane Sanctuary Coalition urges elected officials to protect undocumented immigrants

“Our undocumented immigrant neighbors and friends, and the 4.4 million US citizen children living with them, deserve to live with dignity, free of fear, insecurity, and anguish. We must allow them to thrive. Otherwise, Americans will continue to live with generations of traumatized children, who become traumatized adults. The time for change is now.

As people of faith, we urgently ask you to advocate and work towards:

  • Paths to legalization: Presidential pardon; expansion of Temporary Protected Status.

  • Abolishing of 287g, a policy that creates constant fear and stress in immigrant families.

  • Ending for-profit detention centers – there is flagrant abuse and unaccountability, not to mention the immorality of profiting from people’s vulnerability.”

First Baptist & Bethany UMC Support Resettling Afghan Refugees

Congregations, resettlement agencies, among other organizations across Wisconsin, are actively doing the important work of helping hundreds of Afghan refugees establish new homes and establish supportive relationships with their communities. In Madison, Bethany United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church are partnering to help four households in an extended family of Afghan refugees. These households have eight adults and 15 children, including a newborn who is now their first US citizen! This ministry complements support provided by Jewish Social Services, the resettlement agency for the family, Open Doors for Refugees, among others.

In working with the Afghan families, we have seen how very difficult resettlement is for them. We have learned of other Afghan families that are isolated and that have needs that aren’t being met for various reasons, including language and cultural barriers. Helping them become self-sufficient is a multi-faceted effort requiring an on-going relationship that seeks to balance mentoring and support of their needs with letting them take responsibility for their own lives and the consequences of their actions. It has been a rewarding but challenging experience. We have learned much about their culture and have shared much about our culture. This friendship began with directly connecting with the Afghan families, something that is a real programmatic need for congregations also wanting to befriend Afghan families.

Thank you for your donations!

What started with a few friendly neighborhood emails exploded into enormous generosity…and by all accounts a project that created a warm welcome to the refugees at Fort McCoy. After two U Haul truckloads (thanks to Open Doors for Refugees for securing the trucks!) and at least 5 car loads…the porch and garage are finally empty and the last load has been delivered. We were able to briefly tour the sewing rooms which THANKS TO ALL OF YOU are filled with sewing machines, fabric, and lots of buttons, zippers, thread and scissors. The women we were able to speak with were excited to be able to create beautiful things for their families. The children…in that universal gesture of warmth….ran to hug us.

Some of you we know, and some of you just found your way to the porch. Some of you are from near Madison and some donations came from other parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota. And, there are some folks who left donations but not an email, so if you know of them, please forward this.

To ALL of you…THANK YOU for your thoughtful generosity. Every remnant, bolt, button and spool mattered. It really did take a village here…and we believe we helped, in a small but meaningful way, to lighten the burden of these new arrivals to Wisconsin that have journeyed so far.
